Intent

At Martlesham Primary Academy, Physical Education is an essential part of our curriculum that is accessible and engaging to all pupils. Our aim is to deliver high quality lessons which allow pupils the best learning opportunities to thrive and develop their own passion for Physical Education. These learning opportunities allow pupils to develop knowledge and understanding of various sports and activities alongside learning and implementing skills into their Physical Education lessons. As well as this, our aim is for all pupils to be physically active and to be educated to make decisions that can lead to healthy and active lifestyles.

Pupils access a mix of competitive and non-competitive sport within the year both in school and in sports events and fixtures against other schools. This allows them to develop and display good sportsmanship as well as giving any pupil the opportunity to access sporting activities.

We also offer Key stage 2 swimming lessons during the summer term. Swimming is an important life skill, and this opportunity allows every key stage 2 pupil to access lessons which will allow them to gain confidence within the water. By the end of primary school, we aspire that every pupil is able to swim 25 metres at the least.

We always value the pupils’ opinions when it comes to physical education and extra-curricular activities, by allowing them to voice their opinions to their class school councillor. This then gets discussed at meetings and can then be implemented into the school.

Implementation

  • Martlesham Primary Academy P.E. lessons provide enjoyable and challenging learning throughout a range of different sports including invasion games, net and ball games, striking and fielding, gymnastics and dance, outdoor adventure activities and swimming.
  • All pupils participate in high quality P.E. lessons each week, where they will cover a certain sport or skill focus throughout the half term.
  • Key Stage 2 classes access swimming during the summer term to ensure that every pupil is able to learn this important life skill and progress in this throughout the key stage.
  • Long term planning of each unit aligns with the national curriculum requirements to ensure that each class is able to meet these requirements. This is tracked by the P.E. lead and is accessible to teachers to allow them to track and identify the development of each pupil.
  • All staff are able to access P.E. planning materials through our P.E. scheme account, Get set 4 PE.
  • Teachers use and adapt planning and resources to ensure lessons across years enable progression as well as ensuring the learning needs of each child being met.
  • Pupils are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. Inclusive and enjoyable clubs are provided at Martlesham which can increase pupil’s physical activity and help them socialise with other pupils. These can lead to pupils representing Martlesham in sports competitions.
  • Physical activities are embedded in the school day, through dance breaks in between activities to physical brain breaks. The KS2 pupils can also access lunchtime sport activities twice a week and during summer term, we encourage children to join in with the daily mile.
  • Pupils are also able to access a range of different play equipment to enable them to stay active during break times and lunchtimes.

Impact

At Martlesham Primary Academy, we ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows pupils to develop fundamental skills, strategies and tactics and apply them to a variety of different sports and activities. All pupils are provided with the skills and given opportunities to demonstrate improvement and progression to achieve their personal best. Our pupils are given many opportunities to be physically active and this has positive implications on their health, learning and social relationships. Pupils understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise. We hope pupils enjoy PE and develop a love for sport and physical activity, and that they pursue these interests outside of school and in future life outside of primary school. All pupils understand the values and importance of fair play and the importance of showing good sportsmanship. Year 6 pupils leave school with the confidence and skills to self-rescue in the water and swim 25 metres competently.

Wider and Extra-Curricular Opportunities

  • Netball club available to children in Key Stage 2 during a lunch time a week, giving the children the opportunity to develop their skills and play in matches against other schools.
  • Football training available to children in Years 4 to 6 to develop their skills as well as collaboration, resilience and respect, giving children the opportunity to play in matches against other schools.
  • Football club for children in Years 1 to 3, supporting the children to develop the basic skills required for football in a fun and engaging way.
  • Dance Club with Jigzaw Dance, available to all pupils, to develop their skills and work towards taking part in competitions and performances.
  • Sporting achievements are celebrated in school. Children are actively encouraged to bring in any sporting certificates, medals and trophies they have been awarded and these are celebrated in assemblies and on our ‘Sporting Stars’ display board.
